MANILA, Philippines – For the Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday, March 5, opens the penitential season of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving in preparation for Holy Week and Easter.
On this day, Catholics flock to worship places to attend Mass and to have their foreheads marked with ashes as a symbol of repentance from sin. Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstinence. Fasting is required for Catholics aged 18 to 60. Abstinence is required from aged 14.
