MANILA, Philippines – A total of 42 malls under eight chains across the country will turn into voting precincts on May 12 during the nation and local elections in the Philippines.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has signed agreements with the owners of the following malls for some of their branches to serve as voting centers:
- SM Supermalls
- Robinsons Malls
- Megaworld Lifestyle Malls
- Ayala Malls
- Fora Filinvest Mall
- KCC Mall de Zamboanga
- Limketkai Center
- NCCC Mall Palawan
This is the second election cycle where malls would be used as precincts. In 2023, during the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, the poll body piloted mall voting in 14 establishments. The number of venues will be three times in 2025.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia said it’s about time the government looked to alternative venues for our elections, away from public school classrooms. In various forums, he has cited the convenience of malls, especially for those needing assistance: pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with disability.
For 2025, the Comelec has 438,500 established precincts and 93,287 clustered precincts in public schools.
The mall voting centers were scouted by Comelec field officers, and were chosen for their proximity to the original precincts in the areas. Political parties were consulted on these transfer of venues, the poll body said. They will open as early as 5 am on election day.
