MANILA, Philippines – Rappler’s community lead Pia Ranada and multimedia reporter Jairo Bolledo have been chosen to be part of the prestigious Jaime V. Ongpin (JVO) Journalism Seminar panel, the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) announced on Tuesday, November 12.
Together with three other journalists from other news organizations, Ranada and Bolledo “will discuss selected issues and concerns about the future of journalism in the country.”
They were selected by senior journalists of the CMFR board of trustees on the basis of their body of work. The three other panelists are the following:
- Christina Chi, Philstar.com
- Jane Bautista, Philippine Daily Inquirer
- Kurt dela Peña, Inquirer.net
The seminar will be held on November 19 at 9:30 am at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati.
The seminar is named after the late Jaime V. Ongpin, a press freedom advocate during the Marcos dictatorship. The CMFR established the JVOJS “to recognize journalists who have distinguished themselves for the quality of their work in the context of best practice, press freedom protection, and the promotion of media ethics.”
Ranada is currently Rappler’s head of community, in-charge of linking Rappler’s journalism with communities for impact. Previously, she was an investigative and senior reporter for Rappler and covered former president Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.
Meanwhile, Bolledo covers justice, police, and crime for Rappler. He writes stories about the rule of law in the country and lack of justice for victims of impunity in the Philippines.
Previous JVOJS fellows from Rappler include Jodesz Gavilan (Marshall McLuhan 2023 fellow), Bonz Magsambol, Lian Buan, Natashya Gutierrez, Patricia Evangelista (Marshall McLuhan 2019 fellow), Rambo Talabong, and Michael Bueza.
The panel discussion will be followed by the presentation of the Marshall McLuhan Fellow for 2024. – Rappler.com
