NAIA 3 experiencing baggage problems since October 18 — Cebu Pacific

MANILA, Philippines – The Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA 3) has been experiencing issues with its 20-year-old baggage handling system, leading to passengers with delayed baggage.

Cebu Pacific told reporters over Viber on Tuesday, October 22, that the issue has been ongoing since October 18. As of 1:15 pm, 821 checked-in bags had been left behind at the terminal while owners already reached their destination.

“We are working closely with the New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC) which is also exerting every effort to resolve the technical challenges as quickly as possible and restore normal operations,” the budget airline said in a statement.

The NNIC noted that NAIA 3’s baggage handling system encountered a malfunction that affected the processing of passengers’ checked-in baggage.

Both the operator and Cebu Pacific have added personnel to address the issue.

“Alternative systems and protocols have been activated to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible,” the NNIC said in a separate statement.

Cebu Pacific said passengers on domestic flights can either have their bags delivered to their destination or have their bags picked up at the airport. Meanwhile, passengers with international destinations also have similar options on top of delivery services for those with onward destinations.

Affected passengers are advised to reach out directly to the budget carrier for baggage assistance.

Meanwhile, the NNIC said they have already procured a new baggage handling system “with additional redundancy measures” to be set in place. The new operator said it wanted to avoid such issues in the future.

“The incident underscores the urgent need to upgrade NAIA’s aging infrastructure. Since taking over management on September 14, NNIC has been working in phases to modernize the airport’s facilities and critical systems,” the NNIC said.

The San Miguel-led NNIC took over the management and operations of NAIA last September 14, officially kicking off the rehabilitation of country’s main international gateway previously run by the government.

Ramon Ang’s SMC is hoping to modernizing NAIA on top of increasing the airport’s capacity.

Since the turnover, the NNIC hiked the overnight parking fee to P1,000 from just P300. Meanwhile, the price for VIP access now stands at P8,000 from P800.

Airlines are also charged higher aeronautical fees since the start of October. The Air Carriers Association of the Philippines and the Board of Airline Representatives have previously warned that this may affect travel costs for passengers.

However, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista previously told Rappler that changes in fees charged were done with prior consultation with airline representatives and were presented to, and approved by, the Cabinet.

The NNIC will have the difficult task of rehabilitating an airport with a reputation marred by bed bug-infested chairs, air traffic management woes, and broken air-conditioning systems. Under the concession agreement, the NNIC is expected to invest about P122 billion in capital outlay to change that — all on top of sharing 82.16% of its gross revenue with the government. – Rappler.com
